Sergio Aguero: I want to be best in world
Sergio Aguero is dreaming that he will one day emulate his close friend Lionel Messi and be named the best footballer on the planet.
Messi was yesterday awarded the Fifa Ballon d’Or for the fourth year in succession, and Aguero – currently undergoing treatment in Italy for his injured hamstring – was among the first to offer congratulations to his Argentina team-mate.
And Aguero (below) revealed that he aims to one day lift the prestigious prize himself. In an interview with Argentinian magazine Ole, he said: “I know that if I work hard, maybe someday I will win it. I hope so. Every footballer dreams about being the best footballer in the world.
“The dreams are always the same ones – to win a World Cup, the Champions League and to become the best footballer in the world. I would be so happy if one day I win the Ballon d’Or.
“The Ballon d’Or was always going to go to Leo because of all that he has done for Barcelona and even Argentina national team – he deserves it.”
Aguero also paid tribute to another of his countrymen, City hero Pablo Zabaleta – and could not resist pointing out that the full back was briefly ahead of the prolific Messi in the goalscoring stakes this year.
Zabaleta scored in the 3-0 win over Stoke on New Year’s Day – after scoring in the Manchester derby – although Messi’s goal against Espanyol on Sunday means the two are neck and neck for the 2013 goalscoring awards!
“At least until this weekend, Zabaleta had more goals than Messi this year! It’s amazing how well Zaba is playing!” said Aguero “Zaba is so focused. He always tells me that he is going to score one goal per season – ha! But this year I told him that he is going to score more goals.
“He is one of our best footballers at Man City, he plays every match.”
