Park and Lewis to resume rivalry
Stacy Lewis and Inbee Park are set to resume their battle for the world number one ranking at this week’s North Texas LPGA Shootout.
Lewis ended Yani Tseng’s 109-week reign at the top last month after consecutive wins at the HSBC Women’s Champions and the RR Donnelley LPGA Founders Cup, but held on to the position for only a few weeks before Park took over thanks to a victory at the Kraft Nabisco Championship – the first women’s major of the year – and a top-four finish at the LPGA LOTTE Championship two weeks later.
The South Korean has a lead of only 0.34 points over Lewis, however, and the No 1 ranking could change hands again this week.
“My goal was to rise to the top spot around this week and I managed to do it a week early. I will focus on my game because the rankings can change every week,” Park said recently.
Tseng herself might still have a part to play in the battle for the top spot, as could the likes of World No 3 Na-yeon Choi and Ji-yai Shin, who has recently gotten over a lower back injury.
“I missed the Lotte Championship to recover,” Shin said. “I am back in the saddle now the pain is gone.
Lewis might be hoping to steal a march on her rivals this week, however – Texas is where she spent most of her childhood and she can be sure of getting some vocal crowd support.
