Karzai signs execution orders for rapists
On Saturday, President Hamid Karzai signed court orders for the execution of five men convicted of rape and robbery.
Presidential spokesman Aimal Faizi wrote on his Twitter page that Karzai, who is due to leave office in a few days, signed the orders today.
Earlier this month, the Kabul Court of Appeals upheld a lower court verdict against the perpetrators.
Clad in police uniforms, the men stopped a vehicle on the main road in Paghman that had been driving home from a wedding. The men then stole valuables from those in the vehicle after which they sexually assaulted the four women in the group.
The sexual assaults drew strong condemnation from the Afghan populace, with some calling for the accused to be hanged in public.
