Karzai Cuts Short Jail Terms of Female Inmates
KABUL – As the world marked International Women’s Day on Saturday, President Hamid Karzai issued a decree reducing jail terms of women and juvenile female prisoners. The Administrative Affairs Department at the Presidential Palace in a statement said the decree awarded one year concession in jail terms to woman prisoners, who had been sentenced to more than five years in jail and six months to those jailed for five years.
The decree also shaved three months off the jail terms of juvenile female offenders jailed up to one year. Under the decree, women jailed for more than 10 years have had their sentences cut by one and a half year. Prisoners with more than five-year sentence would be eligible for release a year earlier. The decree says: “The Women’s Affairs Ministry will keep releasing woman prisoners in compliance with the presidential decree until family members turn up to receive them.” (Pajhwok)
