Indian Election Commission gives outgoing gov’t go-ahead to appoint next Army chief
India’s independent Election Commission Monday gave its nod to the outgoing Congress-led government to begin the process of appointing the next Indian Army chief, sources said.
The current Indian Army chief, General Bikram Singh, retires on July 31, and as per the prevailing tradition, his successor has to be appointed two to three months prior to that.
“The Election Commission has informed the Defense Ministry that it can go ahead with the process of naming the next Army chief, after the main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party had sought the poll panel’s intervention over the appointment,” the sources said.
The BJP insists that the outgoing government should leave it to the next government to appoint the next Indian Army chief.
