Hundreds Rally In Kabul Against Election Anomalies
KABUL: Supporters of presidential hopeful Dr. Abdullah Abdullah on Saturday staged two separate protest demonstrations in Kabul, demanding the prosecution of those involved the June 14 runoff fraud.
Haji Khalil, one of the demonstrators, told Pajhwok Afghan News that the two electoral bodies and the government had been involved in massive fraud during the second round of the election.
He warned if genuine and faked votes were not separated, their protest would continue. The angry protestors also demanded the suspension of Independent Election Commission (IEC) Secretary Ziaul Haq Amarkhel.
On Election Day, the IEC secretary was stopped by police with poll-related materials on his way to Sarobi district. But Amarkhel denied the fraud allegation and blamed the Kabul police chief for overstepping his mandate.
Another protestor, Nazir Ahmad, said: “We have gathered here not for disruptive purposes but want to ensure respect for our votes.” He urged the authorities to uphold democratic norms.
Separately, a large number of women staged a demonstration in front of Zarnigar Park in support of the Reform and Unanimity team. They chanted against fraud and rigging in the runoff.
Earlier, Dr. Abdullah blamed President Hamid Karzai and the lection commissions for large-scale fraud in the vote, saying he would not accept the results
