Foiling Kabul Terror Plot a Great Success
The National Directorate for Security (NDS) officials on Friday said a truck-load of eight tons of explosives had been defused in an operation against would-be bombers in eastern Kabul on Wednesday.
Speaking at a press conference, the National Directorate of Security (NDS) spokesman Shafiqullah Tahiri told reporters in Kabul that if the massive plot had been successful, it could have destroyed an area around 1.5 kilometers.
According to the NDS spokesman, the Haqqani Network and the socalled Quetta Shura, the main body of Taliban leadership have been behind the largest-ever terror plot targeting Kabul city. The major plot in Kabul came few days after an attack in northern province of Kunduz that killed father and a brother of Abdul Rauf Ibrahimi, the Speaker of the lower house of the Parliament.
The Kunduz attack and seizure of the eight-ton explosive-loaded truck in Kabul indicate that the Taliban and Haqqani Network are desperately trying to destabilize big cities including the capital Kabul. These events seems to be related to a series of latest attempts by the insurgent groups to target major security and government compounds as well as government officials across the country.
This year, the Taliban and Haqqani Network have organized a series of attacks on Kabul and many other key provinces. Last month, the Taliban targeted a compound of the National Directorate for Security (NDS) in downtown Kabul and the Kabul Traffic Police headquarter.
The plot is an alarm for security of the capital and the most populous city in the country. It indicates that the terrorist groups spare no efforts to put Kabul city on fire and kill innocent people as a show of strength against the government of Afghanistan and the USled NATO forces.
The plot exposes the face of the devil and shows that how the capital could be vulnerable to major terror attacks that could result to deaths of hundreds and even thousands of innocent people. In general, it shows the fact that Afghanistan is still vulnerable against insurgents’ attacks and will be so in the post- 2014 era when the US-led NATO ends its combat mission in Afghanistan.
However, the operation carried out by security and intelligence operatives is a major success in foiling deadly attacks against the government buildings, security establishments and innocent people. The Afghan spy agency has foiled many terror plots in the past, proving itself a highly capable security and intelligence institution in the country.
The security institutions including the Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of Interior Affairs need to review the security system and arrangements for defending Kabul and other cities. The major attacks in recent months on big cities particularly Kabul indicates that the capital and other cities would come under attacks in future while the security charges are being transferred to the Afghan security forces. Therefore, the security agencies need to devise an extensive security system for the capital and other major cities across the country.
