EU stresses aid to landslide survivors
The European Union ambassador visited the devastated Ab Barik village in Badakhshan province, paying respects to the victims and their families and attending a condolence ceremony.
EU Special Representative Ambassador Franz-Michael Mellbin accompanied First Vice President Mohammad Yunus Qanuni on his visit to the remote flattened village on Sunday.
During the ceremony at the mass grave, Mellbin quoted American historian Henry Adams: “Chaos is the law of nature; order is the dream of man.” He said when natural disasters struck, people stood together and acted as one to help and care for each other.
In a statement, he said: “Our thoughts, sympathy and condolences go out to the families and friends of the victims. The people of Europe and all Europeans in Afghanistan share your grief at the loss of so many lives.”
He called for ensuring the welfare, health and living conditions of survivors, who have lost their homes and all personal belongings. He stressed all possible measures to limit the effects of the disaster.
The European Union is following emergency relief efforts in close coordination with humanitarian actors on the ground. Partners of the EU Humanitarian Aid Agency (ECHO) have started providing relief items such as emergency shelters to the affected population
