Balkh Journalist Injured in Attack
MAZAR-E-SHARIF – Unidentified gunmen opened fire on a local journalist in Mazar-e-Sharif, the provincial capital of northern Balkh province, leaving him critically wounded, an official said Tuesday. Mukhtar Wafaee, in charge of Howida website, was injured when unidentified gunmen opened fire on him, Col. Abdul Razaq Qadari, provincial police chief, told Pajhwok Afghan News.
Police, he said had started raids to identify and nab the perpetrators. Having injuries’ mark on his face, the victim said unidentified men attacked him last evening when he was on his way to home from university in the third municipality district of the capital city.
Wafaee said, he fell unconscious while gunmen started beating him with their rifles. After a while, he then rushed to the police station to register his complaint. Noor Agha Sharif, head of Nai— an organization supporting media— expressed shock over the brazen attack on the journalist, said the government miserably failed to protect journalists’ community.
