Albertini: AC Milan should Release Players to Sign Khedira
Demetrio Albertini has urged AC Milan to release the likes of Philippe Mexes and Michael Essien in order to free up cash to sign Sami Khedira from Real Madrid.
Mexes has been frozen out of the first team by new coach Filippo Inzaghi, while Essien has only made three Serie A appearances this term, and both are expected to leave San Siro when their contracts expire at the end of the current campaign.
Albertini, though, is floating the idea of getting rid of both players as soon as possible in order to fund a move for Khedira, who will also be a free agent next summer.
“Milan could carry out a series of releases – naturally or immediately, because some big contracts are expiring – so that they could focus all of their economic power on this deal,” the former Milan midfielder told Gazzetta dello Sport.
“Khedira would represent a serious and solid investment, capable of resolving most of the structural problems of a team that can and should still be considered a work in progress
“He’s a true champion. Despite still being young, he’s experienced and thus able to take on the important responsibilities of every position in midfield.”
Khedira was heavily linked with Premier League duo Chelsea and Arsenal during the close-season and there is speculation that Madrid could yet allow him to leave the Santiago Bernabeu during the January transfer window so as to avoid losing the 27-year-old on a free at the end of the season.
